Identify the engine and model year before choosing a plug or service interval. Common XV70 powertrains include the 2.5-litre A25A-FKS petrol engine, the 2.5-litre A25A-FXS hybrid engine and, in selected markets, the 3.5-litre 2GR-FKS V6. The XV80 also uses a petrol engine within its hybrid system. An inline four needs four plugs; the V6 needs six.

Important. This guide covers the XV70 and XV80 Camry. These versions do not use diesel engines, so they have spark plugs rather than glow plugs. Confirm the VIN, model code, engine code and original destination before ordering parts.

Why the Camry Does Not Need Glow Plugs

A spark plug creates an electrical arc that ignites the compressed petrol-air charge. A glow plug is a heater for a diesel combustion chamber. The Camry powertrains covered here use spark ignition, so no preheating circuit or glow plugs are fitted.

The same rule applies to the hybrid. Its traction motor can launch the car and the petrol engine can stop while driving, but every engine restart and combustion event still depends on four spark plugs.

When an Early Inspection Is Appropriate

A worn plug can appear normal at idle yet misfire as cylinder pressure rises. The first complaint may therefore occur only during firm acceleration, an uphill pull or a journey with a full load.

Petrol Camry warning signs

  • the engine shakes after a cold start or idles unevenly;
  • acceleration brings a hesitation, a brief loss of power or a flashing Check Engine lamp;
  • the ECM stores P0300 or a cylinder-specific P0301–P0306 code;
  • fuel consumption rises without a comparable change in route, load or tyre pressure;
  • the exhaust smells of unburned petrol or cranking takes longer than before.

Hybrid Camry warning signs

  • the petrol engine joins in with an unusual thump or vibration;
  • transitions between electric drive and engine operation are less smooth;
  • the engine stays on more often and average fuel use increases;
  • misfire appears after an automatic engine restart or a sudden power request;
  • a warning appears and misfire codes remain in memory.

None of these symptoms proves that the plugs are at fault. A coil, boot, injector, intake leak, fuel-pressure deviation, contaminated airflow sensor or low compression can produce a similar complaint. Hybrid diagnosis also considers 12-volt supply condition and the circumstances in which the engine starts.

How the Camry Ignition System Works

Each plug has its own coil. The ECM controls spark timing and coil dwell, then watches crankshaft-speed changes to identify cylinders that contribute less torque than expected.

Electrode erosion gradually widens the gap and raises the voltage required to fire it. Leakage may then appear through a coil boot or across the insulator before the engine misfires continuously. Automatic engine stops in a hybrid do not change that requirement: the next restart still needs an immediate, stable spark.

Conditions That Shorten Plug Life

  • continued operation with a mixture that is consistently rich or lean;
  • engine oil or coolant entering the combustion chamber;
  • an incorrect heat range, reach, resistance value or electrode design;
  • a leaking coil boot, moisture or oil inside a plug well;
  • repeated short trips that do not bring the engine fully to operating temperature;
  • sand and debris left around the plug well during removal.

An installed plug is sealed from outside dirt. Exposure becomes a service risk when the coil is removed, so the wells should be cleaned before the plug is loosened.

What Delayed Replacement Can Cause

  1. A wider gap raises the ignition-voltage demand.
  1. Misfire may begin under load and later become noticeable at idle.
  1. Unburned fuel can overheat the catalytic converter.
  1. Prolonged misfire can stress a coil and increase exhaust emissions.
  1. A rough petrol-engine restart reduces the smoothness of hybrid operation.
  1. New plugs cannot correct an injector, coil, wiring or mechanical fault.
Critical warning. Reduce load and stop safely if the Check Engine lamp flashes while the vehicle shakes and loses power. Continued driving may overheat the catalyst. Hybrid-system work must follow Toyota high-voltage safety procedures.

Toyota Camry Service Guidance and Specifications

The 2025 A25A-FXS manual specifies DENSO FC16HR-Q8 plugs and a 0.8 mm nominal gap. Toyota also states that the gap on an iridium-tipped plug must not be adjusted. Use the manuals section at toyota.ae to locate the document for another regional version.

For the North American XV70, the 2024 schedule lists spark-plug replacement at 120,000 miles or 144 months in the Warranty and Maintenance Guide. Treat that figure as market-specific rather than universal.

2GR-FKS 3.5 V6, XV706Confirm by VIN and manualSee manualDo not transfer inline-four data to the V6

How to Read the Table

  • The engine code is more reliable than a trim-level description.
  • A four-plug A25A set is not a substitute for the six plugs required by the 2GR-FKS.
  • A designation and gap apply to a particular manual version.
  • Do not bend a fine iridium electrode to change its gap.
  • Count the interval from the last documented replacement, not only from total vehicle mileage.

Selecting the Correct Set

Matching thread diameter is not enough. Reach, seat design, heat range, resistance, electrode construction and terminal form must also correspond to the engine. Confirm the part number against the VIN and inspect the marking on every plug before installation.

Checking a Used Camry

A statement that the plugs were replaced should be supported by a date, mileage, part number and workshop invoice. Current offers are best compared alongside service history: low mileage alone does not confirm that the correct plugs were fitted or that an earlier misfire was properly diagnosed.

What a Removed Plug Can Indicate

Visual inspection is useful only when matched with fault codes and operating conditions. The colour of one plug is not a complete diagnosis.

Diagnosing Ignition System Faults

Store the DTCs, freeze-frame record and complaint conditions before removing parts. Compare cylinders first, then replace only what the evidence supports.

Any version: P0300A complete worn set is possibleFuel quality, mixture, pressure, intake leakReview freeze frame and fuel trims
Flashing Check Engine lampActive misfire may overheat the catalystAny cause of severe misfireRemove load and diagnose promptly

Diagnostic Sequence

  • Save all DTCs and freeze-frame data before clearing memory.
  • Record coolant temperature, load, engine speed and the exact moment of misfire.
  • Check coil connectors, supply, boots and visible tracking marks.
  • Keep removed plugs identified by cylinder and compare them side by side.
  • Test the injector, intake sealing and compression if the fault does not follow the plug or coil.
  • Clear codes after the repair, complete a controlled road test and scan the system again.

Practical Pre-Service Checklist

☐ Record the VIN, model code, production year and engine code.

☐ Confirm quantity, designation and interval in the vehicle documents.

☐ Save DTCs and freeze-frame data before disconnecting power or clearing memory.

☐ Let the engine cool and clean the area around the coils.

☐ Use the correct tools and the tightening torque stated in the manual.

☐ Inspect coils, rubber boots, connectors and plug wells.

☐ After assembly, confirm that every connector is locked and the engine runs evenly.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ordering plugs from the description ‘Camry 2.5’ without checking the engine code and VIN.
  • Applying the service interval from one destination's guide to a different vehicle specification.
  • Bending a fine iridium electrode to alter the gap.
  • Replacing the set without testing coils, injectors, mixture and compression when misfire is active.
  • Clearing DTCs and freeze-frame data before recording the original fault conditions.
  • Leaving sand, oil or water in a plug well before loosening the plug.
  • Tightening a plug in a hot aluminium cylinder head without the specified torque procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spark Plugs

Does a Toyota Camry Hybrid Have Spark Plugs

Yes. The electric motor assists propulsion, but the A25A-FXS petrol engine still ignites its mixture with four spark plugs.

Does the XV70 or XV80 Camry Have Glow Plugs

No. The versions covered here are petrol or petrol-hybrid models. Glow plugs belong to diesel engines.

Should All Plugs Be Replaced Together

Routine service normally replaces the full set so every cylinder has comparable ignition performance. If one nearly new plug is damaged, diagnose the reason before fitting another.

Can the Gap on an FC16HR Q8 Be Adjusted

Toyota specifies 0.8 mm and states that the gap on an iridium-tipped plug must not be adjusted. Replace a damaged or incorrect plug.

Does a Flashing Check Engine Lamp Always Mean Worn Plugs

No. It indicates severe active misfire, but a coil, injector, mixture problem, wiring defect or mechanical fault may be responsible.

Does the 120000 Mile Interval Apply to Every Camry

No. That value belongs to a particular maintenance schedule. Use the service plan for the exact model year and original destination.

Can the A25A and 2GR FKS Use the Same Plugs

Do not select by appearance. Quantity and specification differ, so confirm the part number against the VIN and manual.

Conclusion

Select Camry XV70 and XV80 spark plugs by engine code, VIN and destination-specific documents. The A25A-FKS and A25A-FXS use four plugs, while the 2GR-FKS uses six. Toyota specifies DENSO FC16HR-Q8 with a non-adjustable 0.8 mm gap for the 2025 A25A-FXS. Document and diagnose misfire before replacing parts, because new plugs will help only after coil, supply, injector, mixture and mechanical faults have been excluded.
