This 1981 Toyota Hilux 4-wheel drive pickup underwent a cab-on, bed-and-doors off restoration completed in 2015. You might recognize the Campbell’s Tomato Soup Red (Duxone factory code 391) paint. Retaining its original floor pans and chassis, it’s powered by the legendary 2.4L inline 4-cylinder engine known as the 22R. Fed by a Weber performance carburetor, the engine exhales through custom-made Doug Thorley headers and is fitted with a high-output oil pump and a double timing chain with special gears to handle extra torque. Keeping it all cool is a copper, 3-core, heavy-duty radiator with a 7-blade clutch fan.
Well detailed and dressed, the 22R is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and spins special 4.37 gearing in the front and rear differentials that are set with quarter-inch plate steel trusses and skid plates to hold axle tubes in place. The chassis is beautifully built with a one-ton suspension comprised in part of eight rear leaf springs and four heavy-duty, front leaf springs with specially designed, heavy-duty shackles and pins, as well as twin, specially designed steering stabilizer shocks. The Rancho RS9000 air shocks are linked to an onboard air compressor that is adjustable from the cab, and the front shock towers have been modified to accommodate the demands of the system.
Ensuring exceptional range, an auxiliary 15-gallon fuel tank has been installed and linked to the factory fuel tank. Speaking of auxiliary, the truck is to be sold with a one-off trailer modified to match the Toyota bed, right down to an identical cloth shell cover.
