UK-supplied and perhaps one of the finest examples available with under 19,000 miles covered by just one owner-driver from new.
Entering the World Rally Championship in 1980, it took Subaru seven years to get a podium, with a third at the New Zealand Rally of 1987. Predicting the domination of the sport by Subaru in the following decades would’ve been considered lunacy by many however, Team Principal Dave Richards and his Prodrive engineers shaped the Legacy of Subaru, pardon the pun, and Subaru, with the Impreza that followed becoming a legend on the gravel, piloted by the much missed Colin McRae and Richard Burns amongst other international names.
Heavily modified examples of the Impreza, usually imported from Japan, are often heard before they are seen on British roads, but UK-supplied, unmodified cars are a much more subtle proposition and therefore highly sought after. The rally-engineered, limited-edition WRX models were bought by wealthy enthusiasts and coveted by fans and consequently the WRX has an almost cult-like following today with values across all model ranges reflecting the demand.
The styling of the second-generation WRX received mixed reviews at launch and was swiftly nicknamed the “Bugeye”, however, a better received face-lifted version was launched in 2004 a much more handsome car which was to remain in production for the following two years. Under the bonnet was a 2.0-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder boxer engine, delivering around 261 bhp to all four wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. This Impreza WRX STi Type UK was sold to its first and only registered keeper on the 25th November 2005 and is offered to auction with just 18,962 miles from new, at the time of cataloguing.
It's finished in the model’s classic hue of World Rally Blue over a blue and black cloth and Alacantara-style trimmed cabin and sits on a correct set of 17-inch 10-spoke gold alloy wheels, framing gold Brembo brake callipers and shod with Bridgestone Potenza tyres. The cabin is equipped with air conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, a retrofitted Sony DAB stereo with a USB port, and a PSi3 Advanced Vehicle ECU Data Monitor. An aftermarket stainless-steel exhaust, ‘Ganador’-style door mirrors, TEIN suspension dampers, and Defi oil pressure, temperature and boost gauges have also been fitted.
The car is accompanied by its original owner’s book pack, service book, V5C, various maintenance receipts and invoices, previous MOT Certificates, the most recent valid until April 2023, and two keys plus a remote fob. The cherished and appropriate registration 'SR04 WRC' is included in the sale. This car ticks so many boxes in terms of rarity, mileage, condition and ownership it could easily fit into a private collection of important motorcars, however, we feel it would be so much better if it was cherished by a true enthusiast for occasional spirited driving, which is exactly what it was designed to do.
