Presented in May 1968, the Renault 4 Plein Air was a charming little beach car. With no doors and a simple hood by way of a roof, it was built by Sinpar. Although it was the perfect symbol of this carefree time, the Plein Air was not a success, with only 550–650 cars produced, according to various sources. The current owner’s father, a Renault dealer from Champigny, bought this example in July 1968. He confirmed that the longest journey it made was the drive down to Saint-Tropez, after which the car remained on the Côte d’Azur and was little used. In 2006, it was registered in his wife’s name, retaining its original registration number, and then in his daughter’s name in 2025.
This Plein Air has covered less than 9,700km from new and is in remarkable original condition, with just a respray in its original colour. We noted that the speedometer is no longer working, although the odometer is still functioning, as is borne out by the records for its safety inspections since 2006. As was often the case, the electrical system was converted from 6 to 12V in the 1970s, which required the replacement of the odometer. In 2023, the car was given a major mechanical service and the braking system was overhauled. In 2025, the ball joints and bearings were replaced.
Sold with its owner’s manual and service book, this extremely rare Renault 4 Plein Air is certainly one of the best-preserved and lowest-mileage examples on the road, a real gem of a car. Please note that contrary to what is stated in the catalogue, the mileage shown on the odometer cannot be certified as original, as it was replaced during the conversion of the electrical system to 12V in the 1970s.
