A benchmark of authenticity, this 1965 Porsche 912 is build sequence No. 98 out of the first 100 built and is believed to be the very first 912 imported to the United States. One of only nine known to exist of this initial production run of 100 cars, it was the subject of a cosmetic and mechanical restoration completed in 2016. This 912 has been bestowed with the Petersen Perfection Award in 2016, selected as one of 55 of the most significant Porsches to be exhibited at the Petersen Museum, and chosen for inclusion in the book “The Porsche Effect” celebrating 70 years of Porsche excellence.
The early ancestry of this car is evident in myriad details including the three-gauge instrument cluster, the body-color dashboard devoid of trim face and the plastic-rimmed 4-spoke steering wheel with the “hockey puck” horn button. Not only is this machine a significant piece of Porsche heritage, but its first owner—“Fearless Fred” Goeske—is an automotive legend unto himself. Goeske was a Funny Car driver during the heyday of drag racing in Southern California, running primarily in Mopar machines and earning the "Fearless" moniker by breaking many dauntless records, including being the first driver to reach 400 MPH.
He was drafted into military service in 1960 and entered into the finance business of arranging car loans for fellow soldiers upon his discharge in 1964. While stationed in Germany, he ordered and purchased the No. 98 Porsche 912 finished in its Ivory exterior with black Leather seats and cloth inserts. At the end of Goeske’s active duty, he had the car imported to the U.S. and continued with his drag-racing exploits. A speed addict, he grew weary of the escalating costs of professional drag racing and started to run jet-powered funny cars.
Goeske was forced to retire from racing after he crashed at 275 MPH at the Spokane drag strip. "Fearless Fred" had to be one of the most interesting characters to ever pilot a 912, and his ride remains a remarkable car today.
