1965 marked the introduction of the revolutionary Porsche 911 to the U.S. market, replacing the 356 as the company’s flagship. Typical for the folks at Porsche, the 911 was subjected to constant tinkering and so began an ongoing series of revisions, modifications, deletions and refinements. The first changes were in service to improved performance, resulting in the 1966 911S with a jump to 160 HP, disc brakes and the Fuchs magnesium wheels that would become a Porsche trademark. But a much more significant development resulted from the demand for an open 911 in the tradition of the 356 Cabrios, Speedsters and Roadsters.
Unfortunately, Naderite forces in America were casting a baleful eye at convertibles, whose days even then seemed numbered as a result of looming rollover regulations. Ferdinand Porsche anticipated this development, and responded with the 911 Targa, which offered open-air motoring with the protection of a rollover hoop. Today the term “targa top” is part of automotive nomenclature, and examples like this restored 1971 model, one of just 989 produced, are in high demand among Porsche enthusiasts.
Documented with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, it is correctly finished in factory Silver paint with a Black leatherette interior and incorporates a matching numbers drivetrain comprising the 2.2 L flat-6 engine and 5-speed manual transmission. The subject of a recent engine inspection and service by Gary Dielachen, this attractive early-era Targa retains its factory original aluminum deck lid and rear valence, 15×6-inch Fuchs wheels, tinted glass and removable Targa top.
