Fifty years ago, Porsche launched the 911R (“R” for “Racing”), a lightweight 911 with alloy and fiberglass body panels, and a willing twin-cam flat-6 engine. A rarity, that high-strung little beast was the inspiration for the 2016 version that easily qualifies as the purest 911 on the road today. With decades of experience on tap, Porsche Motorsport engineers assembled a 911 that rewards driver input above all else, and that meant making it a blast to drive. The 2016 Porsche 911R tilts the scales at a feathery 3,020 pounds, and it draws much of its content from the GT3, including its naturally aspirated 4.0L 500 HP flat-6 powerplant.
The fact that Porsche made this road rocket available only with an exclusive 6-speed manual transmission pleases über-purists, as nothing less is sufficient for putting the driver completely in charge on the road—although there is rev-matching available for those who don’t yet fully trust their own heel-and-toe skills. The GT3 was also the source for the 911R’s suspension, steering and braking systems, as well as its racy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and 20-inch center-lock alloy wheels. The 911R’s suspension and steering geometry are slightly less aggressive than those of the GT3, but the Porsche carbon-ceramic brakes possess the same incredible fade-free stopping power.
Its lightweight body panels—carbon-fiber front fenders and hood, magnesium roof and carbon-fiber cockpit trim—offer the same weight savings as on the GT3. A shallower front splitter and retractable rear spoiler in place of the GT3’s fixed rear wing means less downforce, and that translates to a 200 MPH top speed, higher than both the GT3 and the GT3 RS. Finished in deep black trimmed with dual red stripes that recall the original, this 2016 Porsche 911R shows just 79 miles on the odometer and is a thrilling reminder of Porsche’s relentless commitment to the pure driving experience.
