Porsche’s celebrated 991-chassis GT3 RS carried on the tradition of a lightweight, track-ready, street-legal beast—but in the interest of ultimate performance, Porsche only offered the car with its PDK transmission, leaving no option for a traditional manual. This frustrated many, and the purists made their displeasure known.
Porsche heeded its customers’ requests and in short order released a limited-edition 911 with the GT3 RS drivetrain but fitted with a manual transmission. Dubbed the 911 R, it was introduced at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show. Mechanically similar to the GT3 RS, though lacking the massive rear wing for a more subdued aesthetic, it carried a different ethos, with numerous changes to its suspension and steering. Fittingly, Porsche produced only 991 examples of the 911 R for the 2016 model year.
The example offered here was delivered new to Loeber Motors’s Porsche of Lincolnwood in Lincolnwood, Illinois. Finished in what is perhaps the most iconic of all liveries for the model, white with red racing stipes, the interior was furnished with numerous extra-cost upgrades from the factory, including Black leather upholstery with contrast stitching in GT Silver throughout, including on the doors and dashboard.
Carrying a manufacturer suggested retail price of a breathtaking $214,170 when new, this 911 R was outfitted with $26,920 in factory options, highlighted by a single-mass flywheel with reinforced clutch, extended-range fuel tank, front axle lift system, air conditioning, Light Design Package, Sport Chrono Package, Bose surround sound system, carbon fiber floor mats with leather edging, side stripes with Porsche scripts in red, extended interior packages, auto-dimming mirrors with integrated rain sensor, Porsche Communication Management including navigation module, LED headlights in black with Porsche Dynamic Light System, and SportDesign exterior mirror upper trim in carbon fiber.
In March of 2022 current ownership commissioned Porsche of Woodland Hills to complete the 10,000-mile service; mount, balance and align four new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, which have seen limited road use since fitment; as well as perform the installation of the front lower spoiler and under panel. The 911 R is offered with just 742.3 miles on the odometer at time of cataloguing.
One of only 991 produced, this low-mileage, desirably optioned 911 R offers GT3 RS-levels of performance with added comfort and subtle styling—truly making it the ultimate driver’s Porsche.
