This 2008 Porsche 911 GT3 RS is one of just 413 imported into the United States and has been driven just 16,965 miles since new. The GT3 RS was produced as a street-legal car in order to comply with the homologation rules of the various racing sanctioning bodies such as the SCCA, IMSA and Grand Am of which it actively campaigned in the GT class. The GT3 RS is a seven-time championship class winner in the American Le Mans Series and has placed first overall at both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. The GT3 RS is more than just a warmed-up standard 911. It occupies a focused niche in the lineup and uses a number of specialized parts.
The engine block is referred to as the “Mezger” engine—named after its designer Hans Mezger. This is a motorsports-derived engine and is distinctly different than the one used in the other standard 997 generation-one models. This 3.6-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine produces 415 horsepower—an amazing 1.88 horsepower per cubic inch in naturally aspirated form. Under the guidance of Andreas Preuninger—Porsche’s ace Chief Development Engineer—the entire setup on the GT3 has been re-configured with larger brakes, sculpted body pieces to add aerodynamic downforce, recalibrated suspension and lowered ride height.
The GT3 RS is further endowed over its GT3 brethren with a weight reduction of 44 pounds—by using a carbon-fiber rear wing and plastic engine cover—and widened rear fenders that allow for wider wheels and tires. The net result is a factory-rated top speed of 193 miles per hour and 0-60 acceleration time of just 4.3 seconds. This amazing car quintessentially embodies the GT3 RS ethos with its Viper Green color, ceramic brakes, carbon-fiber interior trim and RS lightweight wheels.
