There are two things that are “must knows” about the Porsche 911 GT2: one, it is exceedingly fast; and two, it demands absolute focus and skill from the driver. Based on the 996 Turbo, the GT2 coaxes roughly an additional 50 HP from the engine and weighs in at 220 pounds less than its brethren. The weight reduction is attributed to rear-wheel-drive replacing the all-wheel-drive in the standard Turbo. However, the mechanical specification differences are purely academic, as it is the raw-edged persona of the GT2 that separates it from the standard Turbo.
The GT2 is devoid of any electronic intervention devices—such as Porsche Active Stability Management—or any electronically controlled aerodynamic appendages to compensate for driver error. Porsche did not allow a sunroof option because it would disturb the air pattern to the fixed rear wing. It also did not offer an automatic transmission, since “real drivers” only throw 6-speed manual transmissions. As one noted Porsche engineer said, “The Turbo is a knife, the GT2 is a razor-edge sword.” Just as a controlled razor can precision slice and dice, all is well until it isn’t. Enter the world of the GT2.
Conversely, when a skilled driver masters the GT2, it is the equivalent of car-control nirvana. The GT2 was the fastest 911 available in 2003 with a terminal velocity speed of 198 MPH. The GT2 is externally identifiable by its model-only specific front-bumper valence—composed of a prominent air-dam skid plate, large cut-outs for cooling the brakes and oil cooler, and an upper-mounted horizonal vent to extract and direct air-flow for additional front downforce. As one of just 233 produced for the 2003 model year, this GT2 shows 12,600 miles on its odometer. This Porsche comes with service receipts, an owner’s manual, a tool kit and a battery maintainer.
