One of the most unique offerings from the Wayne Schmeeckle Collection, this 2004 Pontiac GTO HRSS 454 was built by Aloha Dream Cars in Wisconsin to celebrate “Hot Rod” magazine’s 40th Anniversary. The car was based on the GM Australia Holden Monaro, an outstanding performance coupe that maverick Pontiac General Manager Bob Lutz chose to re-introduce—complete with Corvette power—as the new GTO to the rebounding market for good old-fashioned American muscle. The latest-generation GTO was an excellent foundation for the HRSS 454. Aloha invested 3,150 hours developing and fine-tuning the car’s new custom carbon-fiber body panels and front and rear clips.
The result of that arduous work is a unique reinterpretation of the original big-block bad-boy muscle car, the 1970 Chevelle SS454, its distinctive styling elements found in almost every feature from its horizontal two-segment front grille bracketed by quad headlights, bulging SS-style hood with cowl induction, flaring fenders, rear bumper and tail-light treatment to its black-accented 5-spoke SS-style chromed wheels and rectangular chromed exhaust tips. Even the pairing of cherry red paint and black SS stripes with the red interior harks back to the original.
Any machine with classic-era muscle-car pretenses must deliver tire-smoking performance, a requirement fulfilled by the HRSS with power to spare thanks to its Corvette C5R-based all-aluminum V-8 engine, a 454 CI behemoth packing 10.7:1 compression, a Wilson FAST composite intake manifold and fuel rails, stainless-steel 4-into-1 tube headers feeding stainless dual exhaust. The results, proven in dyno testing, tell a wonderful story: 602 HP at 5,800 RPM and 586 lb-ft of torque at 5,100 RPM, plenty enough to put the 6-speed-manual-equipped HRSS on the same level as some very impressive competition. Not surprisingly, the HRSS interior is a quantum leap from its 1970 inspiration.
The stock GTO’s already first-class accommodations now feature custom HRSS 454 embroidering on the seats, HRSS-logo instrumentation, a special 40th Anniversary steering-wheel medallion and a Blaupunkt 6-disc CD stereo system.
