This build began on a true factory 242 VIN Pontiac GTO from what many consider an iconic year: 1966. The muscle car warfare got tougher that year as other manufacturers finally caught up with manager John DeLorean’s initial volley from 1964, meaning there were now Hemi Mopars, SS 396 Chevelles and multi-carb Oldsmobiles chasing after glory at each stoplight. This car shows it has risen to the task of meeting such challenges, as the factory 389 has been thoughtfully replaced by a reworked 455 CI V-8 Pontiac engine.
Painted turquoise with OE-style chrome valve covers, a classic Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and 4-barrel carburetor are beneath the engine’s open-element air cleaner, and aftermarket plug wires fire the cylinders. Nonetheless, a good deal of original appearance equipment and light patina is seen here, giving the car a factory feel. The bigger engine is still backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. While the legendary Orbit Orange shade was yet to come, this car’s hot paint reminds one of the later days of the ’60s. After all, the 1966 GTO design saw serious changes to its overall shape compared to the 1964-65 releases.
Aggressive body lines and a longer overall appearance, twin-stacked headlamps, the small but telling hood scoop, and the bright GTO lettering in the grille told onlookers exactly what this car was. Inside, it hosts a black vinyl and cloth interior that features front bucket seats with a center console, a Hurst shifter handle with a GTO-themed flat-design wooden knob, wrapped steering wheel, wood-grain dash facing, factory-style gauge cluster and vintage aftermarket stereo unit. Bright trim outside includes the model insignia, lower rocker shields, the surrounds for the blacked-out grille and the heavy-metal big chrome bumpers.
Like the paint, the car’s aftermarket wheels harken to the later era of Pontiac’s five-spoke road wheels, hosting blackwall tires that completes the theme of stock yet hot.
