This Pontiac 20th Anniversary Trans Am is #1,278 of 1,555 ever built. The Trans Am was selected to be the pace car for the 1989 running of the Indianapolis 500 and Pontiac prepared a special model for this occasion, as well as to celebrate the Trans Am's 20th Anniversary. The Trans Am was already a special car, but Pontiac made it iconic by installing an updated version of the legendary Buick Grand National's intercooled, turbocharged V6 engine.

The 3.8-liter 6-cylinder engine mated to an automatic transmission, combined with the WS6 suspension package, resulted in the first car ever to pace the Indianapolis 500 race without needing any performance modifications, a feat that has seldom been repeated. Pace Car #1,278 came in white over a tan interior, was fully loaded with features from the factory and also included the only two options available, T-Tops and leather seating. Having traveled 3,395 actual miles, this Trans Am is in good condition. All components of the car are stock except for the battery and tires.

The only upgrade the car has received is an OEM Pontiac radio with CD player and the original cassette player is included. All original purchase paperwork is present, including the original Build Sheet and Window Sticker as well as documentation from the selling dealership and Pontiac itself. Pontiac Historic Services paperwork shows the build of this specific vehicle and provides a summary of this special anniversary model. Period marketing pictures, brochures and literature are included, in addition to the 1989 Indianapolis 500 official race program.

Special collector items include the owner's package box, which features the original pace car decals, unique key chain, owner's manual cover and operational cassette. Factory-issued service manuals complete the immense documentation included with this car.
