In 1989, to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Trans Am, a total of 1,555 special 20th Anniversary Trans Ams were produced. These vehicles came from the factory with a unique drivetrain, consisting of a special 3.8 Liter, intercooled, turbocharged engine backed by a heavy duty 4-speed automatic transmission. That same year, the 20th Anniversary Trans Am was selected to pace the Indianapolis 500. For the very first time the pace car would not need any modifications other than the addition of strobe lights to serve as pace car duty. This car comes from the Pontiac Historic Services (PHS) collection and is one of the actual 1989 Indianapolis 500 Festival cars used at the track.
Known in the Pontiac Division log as car #80. Only the festival cars came equipped with a Camel cloth interior and removable T-tops and is one of only 187 cars so equipped. This car is in great condition. Title reads mileage exempt. This car is a bit of a time capsule and still wears all four of its original Goodyear tires. Paperwork for this vehicle comes in the form of a signed letter to confirm its festival car status, as well as its car number. It also comes with the original letter to the selected festival attendee, along with the original pair of tickets to the qualifying day for the Indy 500, Pontiac Window Sticker and press media kit.
CARFAX shows an accident reported with another motor vehicle on 11/30/1994 which was professionally repaired and also confirms the odometer reading as 9,900 miles as of 1999, the odometer currently shows only slightly over 10,000 actual miles
