Following World War II the American public developed a voracious appetite for new cars, and Packard re-entered the market after years of wartime production to resume building cars of quality and luxury. Offered only in 4-door sedan and 2-door convertible form, the top-of-the-line Custom Eight was a sublime machine imbued with maturity and style that was at its best in examples like the Custom Eight Victoria convertible offered here. These cars are extremely rare; only 77 were produced in 1950, and today only this example and two others are known to still exist.
Cared for in a private collection for over 32 years, this Packard originally sold for the princely sum of $4,520, the highest list price of any car sold in America and well-justified by its extensive list of features and equipment. All were built with hydraulically-boosted power windows, soft top and power seats, and the vaunted Packard inline-8 flathead engine supplied 160 HP to the Ultramatic transmission. Restored to perfection over 30 years ago and carefully maintained and stored since, this Custom Eight Victoria now shows a believed-correct 35,683 miles.
Its Black exterior finish over superb sheet metal is highly polished and beautifully accented with driving lights, bumper guards, wide Whitewalls on chromed wire wheels with Cloisonné center caps, fender skirts and backup lights. The interior boasts fresh-looking deep Maroon leather and carpets, Tan Bedford cloth inserts and chrome fittings, and comes complete with a driver’s spotlight and factory radio and clock; the trunk area is also correctly restored with a matching wire wheel and Whitewall tire.
