It started back around 1985 with a corporate internal design contest aiming to boost sales of the Nissan March hatchback. The contest encouraged people to submit body ideas that could be adapted to the March’s chassis, and Naoki Sakai’s design won. An outside consultant with experience in fashion and tattooing, his automotive styling skills were in their infancy at the time, but his sketch created the Be-1, which was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor show as a concept. Nissan put the Be-1 into production and promoted it would build just 10,000 copies; Nissan was immediately overrun with orders. A lottery system was put into place to fairly distribute the cars.
The response to the retro-cute styling prompted Nissan to conjure up the Pike Factory, a thinktank similar in nature to Lockheed’s Skunk Works, which would dream up cute cars with retro styling that could be easily produced on the platforms of other vehicles. Using the expertise of Takata Kogyo, a company focused on building special-edition vehicles, and keeping Sakai on as the liaison, the Pike Factory was born and three limited production vehicles were produced, one being the Figaro of 1991. Powered by a turbocharged 987cc inline 4-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission, just 20,073 Figaros were built.
Finished in Lapis Grey, this one shows 50,852 kilometers, roughly 31,597 miles, on its odometer and presents beautifully. The sliding, center-section convertible top is power operated and features a rear window defroster. The ivory interior is fitted with an AM/FM/CD/cassette stereo system, air conditioning, Bakelite-style knobs, power windows and bucket seats, marking it as diminutive but well equipped.
