One of the most storied companies in British automotive history, the Morgan Motor Company dates back to 1909 and has stuck to its reputation of hand-building cars not to charm people, but simply because it’s what’s worked. Although heavily modernized today, the cars still employ wooden components and the factory is still largely as it was when it was first established. The cars are wheeled around on dolly trucks from point to point in the factory until they can roll on their own, each segment of production being addressed by professionals, most of whom began working there as an apprentice to learn the craft.
The Morgan +4, or Plus 4, is one of the better-known models with a strangely sporadic production schedule. Introduced in 1950, it ceased production in 1969. For 1985, it was resurrected for production again, only to be shelved in 2000. In 2005, it was again put into production, but replaced in 2020 by the new Plus Four using a bonded aluminum platform, ushering the model into a new era. This 1953 Plus 4 Drophead Coupe was given the new look by the factory in 1954 and was sold new by Fergus Motors in New York City, New York. Powered by a 1991cc Triumph OHV inline 4-cylinder engine with twin SU carburetors, a 4-speed manual transmission channels the power.
The engine is highly detailed with exquisitely well-polished elements. The body is finished in light-medium blue, the convertible top matching the fenders and running boards in dark-medium blue. The interior sustains the colors with light-medium blue door panels and seat covers, dark-medium blue carpets spanning the floor, beautiful ivory gauges surrounded by a smorgasbord of knobs and lights, all nestled into a well stained and polished wooden dashboard. Rolling on steel wheels painted the dark-medium blue, wide whitewall tires and bright hubcaps round out the look.
