At the Earls Court Motor Show in October 1950, the Morgan Motor Company introduced the successor to its long-running 4/4 model, the Plus 4. While bearing an overwhelming outward resemblance to its predecessor, the Plus 4 rode a reinforced chassis four inches longer in wheelbase, and featured new hydraulic brakes and a more powerful engine. Initially fitted with a Standard Vanguard engine, the Plus 4 eventually adopted motors from the concurrent Triumph TR series. By 1966, the model was fitted with the 2,138-cubic-centimeter engine from the Triumph TR4A. With nearly 5,000 examples built through 1969, the Plus 4 was the company’s quintessential post-war product, carving a niche among sporting British roadsters that continues to this day.
This Plus 4 is one of 279 examples built in 1966. According to a Morgan production record on file, chassis number 6155 was specified for the US market, completed as a four-seater finished in Westminster Green paint and trimmed with Red leather upholstery. Equipped with disc brakes and wire wheels, the Plus 4 was further appointed with a tonneau cover, bonnet strap, door pockets, a heater, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel.
Completed in January 1966, the Morgan was distributed a month later to Fergus Fine Cars Inc., a dealership in New York. While the car’s interim history is currently unknown, by 2009 the Plus 4 had reportedly come into the care of Evergreen Historic Automobiles, a respected convertible-focused collection in Evergreen, Missouri, founded by the late collector Robert Plaster. It was likely during this period that the car received the current restoration, which still presents nicely.
In May 2015 the Morgan was acquired by the most recent owner, a Pennsylvania-based collector of British roadsters. By this point the car had been retrimmed with a black interior, and equipped with a Brooklands windscreen inside of the standard fold-down windscreen. Additionally, the steering wheel hub was fitted with a Bulova Accutron wristwatch, contributing to a uniquely sporting driver’s interface.
Steadily maintained in running condition by the owner prior to his passing in 2021, this Morgan is now consigned by his estate, and is believed to retain its matching-numbers TR4A engine. The fetching Plus 4offers considerable potential as an enjoyable driver, or presentation at English car shows and local cars-and-coffee events. It is an unmistakable slice of British motoring that could only be crafted by the legendary Morgan.
