When Mercury was introduced in 1939, the Eight was its upscale model most closely in line with the Lincoln Model K. Sporty and youthful, the Mercury line was intended to fill the gap between Ford and Lincoln, and it did very well doing so. In 1949, Mercury introduced the third generation of the Eight with body styling that would become legend, the preferred car of customizers and Hot Rodders everywhere. With a low, sloping roofline and sculpted body, the car exuded cool even when it was bone stock; but when skilled customizers worked their hands over the already fluidly styled Merc, jaws dropped. This 1950 Mercury took about four years to build, and the effort shines through.
Powered by an 8.3L SFI Viper V-10 engine and 6-speed manual transmission, a Chris Alston Chassisworks frame powder coated in Viper Red breaks up the overall black color motif. It also provides exceptional support for the immensely powerful engine. Out back, a Fab 9 rear end with 3.89 gears and Strange Engineering 31-spline axles send the power to the steamroller-like Mickey Thompson street tires that give the Merc the look of a seriously powerful mover—because, of course, it is. Varispring adjustable coilover shocks and Wilwood disc brakes with slotted rotors help keep things in control while 3-inch Flowmaster exhausts with custom cutouts give the V-10 a unique, throaty growl.
Electric door poppers grant entry and exit, and passengers enjoy an environment of power leather seats, air conditioning, power windows and much more. The Viper gauges add a nice touch, and the tinted glass seems just about as black as the paint. Only 2,000 miles have been put on the Mercury since the completion of the professional build, which is hard to believe, because this car looks like it is itching to get out there and run.
