The subject of a comprehensive restoration, this 1949 Mercury Eight Convertible emerged with mildly customized touches such as the interior and Lake pipes. The 255 CI Flathead V-8 engine is topped with Offenhauser heads and backed by a 3-speed manual transmission. Converted to a 12-volt electrical system, the body was finished in Flame Red and set with fender skirts, refinished chrome and stainless, twin spotlights, dual sideview mirrors and a black, power-operated convertible top. The two-tone black and red interior features power windows and a pushbutton AM radio.

Rolling on wide whitewall tires, the steel wheels are color-keyed and topped with polished wheel covers, and the chassis is well-detailed. For 1946, Mercury would reissue their 1942 model year cars like other carmakers. Regrouping from the War effort would take a little time, so the companies all used their resources and relied on what they had. Customers didn’t seem to care, they all wanted that new car smell in their driveway, and it’s possible that by 1946, most buyers had forgotten what the 1942 models looked like. Mercury would sell these cars through April of 1948 when an all-new body design would be introduced in the modern streamlined spirit.

Sleek and slippery, these aerodynamically styled Mercurys would become the darling of the customizing crowd, likely influenced at least a bit by Jim Stark’s Mercury coupe in Rebel Without a Cause. Available as a four-door sedan, two-door coupe, two-door convertible or two-door station wagon, these would be the first models released from the Lincoln-Mercury division, recently combined as an autonomous division, Henry Ford II thinking they would be more competitive slightly apart from the Ford brand.

They would ride on wheelbases sized between the Ford and Lincoln, use a 255 CI flathead V-8 that was more powerful than the Ford, but not as powerful as the Lincoln V-8, and be priced accordingly, but very attractively.
