Introduced at the New York Auto Show in 1954, the 190 SL was an instant hit with buyers in the market for a luxurious open-topped sports car. It was presented as a more affordable alternative to the 300 SL, while sharing similar design cues and engineering advancements. The 190 used more traditional unitary construction, as opposed to the 300 SL’s race car-like tubular frame covered in aluminum panels.
The engine of the 190 SL was based on the 300 SL’s popular straight-six, and took the form of a 1.9-litre straight-four with identical bore and only slightly reduced stroke. Double-wishbone front suspension with coil springs and an anti-roll bar were allied to power-assisted drum brakes on all four corners. Though no match for its big brother, the 190 SL was nonetheless peppy, with a respectable top speed of 172 km/h.
Little is documented about the early life of this example, though it was subject to a complete restoration in 2017 that culminated in the car being refinished in gunmetal grey over a retrimmed cognac leather interior, said to have been completed by the Dutch workshop, Classic Cars Friesland. Accompanied by a fitted luggage set, this stunning Mercedes-Benz is a highly desirable two-seat sports car from one of the golden eras of the Stuttgart marque.
Dévoilée au Salon de New York 1954, la 190 SL a rencontré un succès immédiat auprès d'une clientèle recherchant un cabriolet de luxe. Elle était présentée comme une alternative plus abordable à la 300 SL avec laquelle elle partageait certains traits de style et divers progrès techniques. La conception de la 190 s'appuyait sur une carrosserie monocoque traditionnelle, alors que celle de la 300 SL était plus proche de la compétition avec une structure tubulaire habillée de panneaux en aluminium.
Basé sur l'excellent 6-cylindres de la 300 SL, le moteur de la 190 SL a pris la forme d'un 4-cylindres de 1,9 litre affichant un alésage identique et une course très légèrement plus courte. Une suspension avant à doubles triangles, ressorts hélicoïdaux et barre antiroulis était associée à des freins à tambours assistés sur les quatre roues. Si elle était loin de sa grande sœur en terme de performances, la 190 SL atteignait toutefois la vitesse de pointe respectable de 172 km/h.
Le passé de cette voiture est peu documenté, mais elle a fait l'objet en 2017 d'une restauration complète au terme de laquelle elle a reçu une peinture gris "gunmetal" avec une sellerie refaite en cuir cognac, travaux qui auraient été effectués par l'atelier hollandais Classic Cars Friesland.
