In 1954, Mercedes-Benz’s legendary competition-inspired 300 SL entered production. Few other cars could come close in either performance or style, but it also carried a hefty price. New York importer Max Hoffman wanted a smaller and more affordable version that he could sell in greater volumes.
The end result was the 190 SL, a stunning roadster in the style of the 300 SL, which reached the market in 1955 and significantly outsold its big brother. Daimler-Benz’s first volume sports car, the 190 SL used a shortened version of the W120 platform and topped it with the unique roadster body shell. The car was marketed as more of a comfortable cruiser than the powerful 300 SL, yet it delivered solid performance for the era, with a top speed of 110 mph. The 190 SL offered a surprising amount of luggage space, with its comparatively large boot and a roomy interior perfectly befitting of its role of sports tourer rather than out-and-out sports racer. Further boosting its desirability, the 190 SL sold for $3,840—about half that of its sibling.
This 190 SL was acquired by the consignor in 2002 in unrestored original condition and has subsequently been subject to a long-term and thorough restoration, with extensive photo documentation accompanying the car. Finished in the classic and chic colour combination of silver over red upholstery, it has been driven infrequently and currently shows only 500 kilometres since the restoration was completed. Complete with an original Becker radio, Mercedes-Benz tool roll with tools, and jack, this 190 SL is presented in truly excellent condition throughout, highlighting the quality of the workmanship and attention to detail.
Put simply, this is a splendid example of one of the most popular and imminently useable open Mercedes-Benz models.
En 1954 apparaît la légendaire Mercedes 300 SL, dérivée de la compétition. A l'époque, rares sont les voitures qui peuvent soutenir la comparaison en terme de performances et de style, mais la 300 SL est également très chère. L'importateur new-yorkais Max Hoffman réclame un modèle moins sportif et plus abordable, qu'il puisse vendre en plus grand nombre.
Le résultat sera la 190 SL, un superbe cabriolet dans le style de la 300 SL, commercialisé à partir de 1955 et dont les chiffres de vente vont rapidement dépasser ceux de sa grande sœur. Première Mercedes de sport de grande diffusion, la 190 SL adoptait une version raccourcie de la plateforme W102, avec une carrosserie cabriolet. La voiture était proposée comme une alternative plus confortable à la puissante 300 SL, mais elle offrait tout de même d'excellentes performances pour son époque, avec une vitesse de pointe dépassant 175 km/h.
La 190 SL disposait d'un vaste coffre à bagages et d'un habitacle spacieux répondant parfaitement à son rôle de voiture de grand tourisme, plutôt que de sportive radicale. Pour la rendre encore plus désirable, son prix s'établissait à 3 840 $, soit environ la moitié de celui d'une 300 SL.
La présente 190 SL a été achetée par son actuel propriétaire en 2002 en état d'origine non restauré, et elle a fait ensuite l'objet d'une remise en état complète sur une longue période. Une documentation photographique accompagnant la voiture en témoigne. Se présentant dans la combinaison classique et chic de gris métallisé avec sellerie rouge, elle a été peu utilisée depuis sa restauration et n'a couvert que 500 km. Complète avec son autoradio d'origine Becker, sa trousse à outils Mercedes et son cric, cette 190 SL se présente en très bel état, grâce à des travaux d'excellente qualité et une attention particulière apportée aux détails.
Il s'agit tout simplement d'un splendide exemplaire d'une des Mercedes découvrables les plus appréciées et les plus facilement utilisables.
