McLaren conceived the MP4-12C, later called just the 12C, as a premium series-production sports car in 2005. A total in-house program, unlike the Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR joint venture in production at the time, the 12C prototype test “mule” was only built after one full year of computer simulations. Test cars were made available early in 2011, and the 12C was first sold as a 2012 model. A design and engineering tour de force, the 12C features racecar power and performance from McLaren’s proprietary 3.8L twin-turbocharged V-8 engine, developing 592 HP initially and later 616 HP, mated to a 7-speed twin-clutch Seamless Shift Gearbox (SSG) with steering-wheel shift paddles.
Stunning performance includes 0-60 MPH acceleration in 3.2 seconds, lowered to 3 seconds with more aggressive Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires fitted. The quarter-mile is covered in just 10.9 seconds at 135 MPH, and top speed for the 12C is 207 MPH. A full competition-style, rigid carbon fiber MonoCell “tub” combines with advanced extruded aluminum subframes mounting a competition-type suspension featuring hydraulically linked active dampers. Driver-selectable power and handling settings include Normal, Sport and Track modes. Massive disc brakes and McLaren’s proprietary Airbrake bring things to a halt.
While designed and built for massive performance, the 12C features scissor-type doors and a sporting, driver-focused interior compartment that is deceptively luxurious and equipped with useful instrumentation and a wide array of amenities. This MP4-12C spider’s many desirable features include a retractable hardtop, front axle lift system, ultra-lightweight wheels, and new tires with fewer than 100 miles of use at the time of writing. A full matte paint protection film guards the original paint finish. Striking, removable Gulf-style livery and black accent panels were applied over the PPF. Carbon fiber options add further distinction.
Recently serviced by an authorized McLaren dealer, this MP4-12C spider is accompanied by a window sticker confirming its original MSRP over $300,000 when new. Enjoying historic status as the first series-production road model from McLaren since production of the Le Mans-winning F1 ended after 1998, this 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider offers unique racebred performance.
