While the vast majority of modern supercars and so-called hypercars certainly boast otherworldly styling, competition-worthy specifications and stunning performance credentials, precious few of them will ever turn a wheel in anger on the race track. Not so for McLaren’s purpose-built 570S GT4, which has ruled racing circuits in its classification worldwide.
In a rare move, McLaren’s engineering wizards took the lessons learned at the track with their competition 570S GT4 and actually updated it for street use, resulting in the rowdy 620R, a true racing car for the road that headlined in a recent Road & Track article as “… the Son of Senna.” Imagine a full-on 450 HP GT-class racing car, reimagined for the road with a tall rear wing and rear air diffuser, with an additional 170 HP coaxed out of McLaren’s proprietary twin-turbo 3.8L V-8 engine for a grand total of 612 HP (620 metric, hence the 620R name), delivered to the rear wheels via McLaren’s competition-derived 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
Looking much like its track-bound stablemate, the 620R is replete with an array of air vents, scoops and aerodynamic aids delivering over 315 pounds of downforce at the front end and 873 pounds at the rear. Power output is maximized by McLaren’s Adaptive Damping System, harnessed by carbon ceramic brakes all around. The aggressive roof snorkel of the 620R is optional in some of McLaren’s markets and a no-cost option for U.S.-bound cars. Of the 350-car 620R production run, this stunning black-on-black example is No. 345 and is in virtually as-new condition with just 55 miles on the odometer.
Built for business, yet deceptively luxurious, the interior compartment is handsomely trimmed in black Alcantara with contrasting red trim and equipped with an audiophile-quality Bowers and Wilkins sound system including SiriusXM satellite radio connectivity and Bluetooth. With red brake calipers and riding on 15-spoke forged wheels surrounded by Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires, this visually and viscerally captivating 2020 McLaren 620R is accompanied by a window sticker confirming its original features, options and factory data.
