While North America stopped receiving Mazda RX7s in 1995, Japan continue building them for the home market through 2002, with the 1996-98 models known as Series 7 and the 1998-2002 known as Series 8. This 1997 Mazda RX7 is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 1.3L/252 HP rotary engine, 5-speed manual transmission and 4-wheel disc brakes. The right-hand drive example’s odometer shows 45,265 kilometers, or about 28,126 miles, and it features air conditioning, a factory MOMO steering wheel, black and gray cloth bucket seats, power windows, power locks, power mirrors and an Addzest radio.
Finished in white, it features a rear spoiler, pop-up headlights and factory five-spoke alloy wheels with low-profile tires. With the 1996 RX7 came a number of updates including more horsepower, thanks to a simplified vacuum routing manifold and 16-bit ECU. The rear spoiler and tail lights were revised, and larger brake rotors and 17-inch BBS wheels were also available. Produced only in right-hand drive, the Series 7 was sold in Japan, the UK, New Zealand and Australia, but by the time the Series 7 was nearing production, prices had risen considerably, causing sales to slow throughout the network.
The Series 8 was only available in Japan and featured a large number of improvements that helped sustain sales, but nowhere near to the degree that RX7 once enjoyed. When it hit the market in 1978, the RX7 was a small, lightweight, well-balanced, two-seater sports car that excited enthusiasts. The original design spanned through 1985 with an entirely new RX7 taking its place for 1986. Larger, heavier and more upscale than the original, it proved continually popular with strong sales. With Datsun (Nissan), Mazda and Toyota all working with turbocharging technology, the stage was set for the onslaught of Japanese supercars for the 1990s.
