Few recall the original “The Fast and the Furious” of 1954, but the B-movie written by Roger Corman is an obscure cult hit that may loosely have contributed to not only the modern franchise of the same name, but also “The Chase,” a 1994 film starring Charlie Sheen and Kristy Swanson. While the original film only used a Jaguar XK120 and a few hairy chases, the newer editions of “The Fast and the Furious” franchise offer a flurry of colorful cars, crazy races and chases, and a cacophony of impossible situations that we all love. One of the most popular movie stars was the Mazda RX7 used by Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel).
Illustrated as highly modified, it’s said that the original hero car used for various close-ups and establishing shots was good for over 300 HP and only somewhat modified with a rebuilt engine fitted with more durable seals to handle the boost. Interestingly, a lot of rotary engine fans noticed the Furious RX7 didn’t sound exactly right, even for a modified one.
Craig Lieberman, the technical advisor for the film who recommended Diesel’s character use an RX7, explained that the sound effects employed a mixed edit of both a Toyota 1JZ and 2JZ engine to create a remarkably exotic and somewhat outlandish sound. “The Fast and the Furious” largely created a frenzy for various Japanese sports cars, especially the RX7 and Toyota Supra, and made JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) cars a household name. This 1993 Mazda RX7 was built by George Barris as part of his All Star Car Collection, and it features a turbocharged 1.3L rotary engine and an automatic transmission. Signed by Barris, it comes with a letter of authenticity and pictures of him with the car.
Painted the correct shade of red, the car is splashed with graphics and corporate logos, is dressed with custom ground effects and an adjustable rear wing, and rolls on forged ALT Wheels with BF Goodrich tires. The tan interior features a number of modifications such as a Sunpro tachometer mounted to the A-pillar and a string of gauges mounted to the dashboard.
