After serving as the technical director for Daimler, Karl Maybach founded his own eponymous company in 1909 to build not only high-end luxury cars but also industrial engines for Zeppelins and tanks. Up until the outbreak of World War II, Maybach became known for building well-crafted, luxury vehicles that rivaled those of fellow German competitor Mercedes-Benz. However, after the devastation of the war, Maybach did not resume automobile production and was eventually bought by Mercedes-Benz.

While Mercedes-Benz used Maybach resources to produce certain hand-built cars, it wasn’t until 1997 that it decided to revive the name for use on a new line of ultra-luxurious, limousine-style automobiles built to rival those made by Rolls-Royce. Debuted at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, the new Maybach was offered in two lengths: a 57-decimeter (about 224.4 inches) and a stretched 62-decimeter (about 244 inches) wheelbase. Based on the Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class platform, the Maybach featured a 5.5L twin-turbocharged V-12 engine that produced 542 HP and 664 lb-ft of torque.

Inside, the Maybach was all about luxury with 18-way adjustable front seats and 14-way adjustable rear seats that recline to near flat. Other niceties included a rear beverage refrigerator, heated cup holders, a rear pop-out folding table and pneumatic soft close doors. The example on offer is a 2005 Maybach 57 finished in Jet Black paint and sports just 38,700 miles on the odometer. Equipped with a sunroof, quad-zone automatic climate control, a rear entertainment system, rear curtains and sumptuous beige leather interior trimmed in burlwood, this luxurious Maybach cost over $300,000 when new and has benefitted from a recent service at an estimated cost of $4,400.

Other amenities include navigation, rear curtains, front and rear parking sensors, pushbutton start and new Pirelli tires.
