The 21st century opened with a procession of supercars from the world’s elite manufacturers that was unique in the history of the automobile industry, with creations such as the Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT, Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, Lamborghini Murcielago and Saleen S7 leading the rush to extreme new heights of performance. Until 2004, Maserati was conspicuous by its absence, but that changed with the unveiling of the show-stopping MC12.
Developed as the instrument of Maserati’s return to international racing after a 37-year hiatus, the MC12 took a uniquely circuitous path to production as a road car, having been developed from the road-going Enzo first as an entrant in the FIA’s GT category, then on to production for homologation purposes. The MC12 bears little resemblance to the Enzo from which it was sourced; longer, lower and wider, the MC12’s all-carbon-fiber body features a low, extended nose for better high-speed aerodynamic penetration, and a long tail conceals a rear diffuser and is topped with a massive full-width spoiler.
A prominent roof-mounted intake scoop feeds Maserati’s Enzo-derived 6.0L 625 HP V-12 engine, launching the big Maserati to 60 MPH in 3.8 seconds and a 205 MPH top speed, just 12.5 MPH behind the Enzo. The MC12’s adaptation to road use required civilizing the racing version’s minimalist interior appointments highlighted by the use of supple perforated blue leather, carbon fiber and Brightex, a synthetic material adapted from the fashion industry that resembles carbon fiber, but is soft and compliant. This 2005 Maserati MC12 is a unique offering from the Gatsby Exotics Collection, one of just 12 Corsa models designed to meet customer demand for a dedicated track car.
With Victory Blue the standard color, the Corsa version was developed directly from the MC12 GT1, which won the 2005 FIA GT Manufacturers Cup. It boasts 745 HP, the GT1’s shorter Le Mans-mandated nose, a sequential-shift racing transmission and steel/carbon racing brakes, putting it in exclusive company as one of the world’s most exciting exotics.
