The 1958-1960 Lincolns were the largest to carry the name to date. They were opulent and flashy, exceptionally well built and comfortable, powerful and reliable—but they were a sales disaster. In the end, these cars cost Ford Motor Company over $60 million in losses, largely spelling the end for the Lincoln division. Various bosses wanted to see the division closed, while others felt there was still a future for the brand. In 1958, Elwood Engle, vice president of Ford design, was asked to create a new Thunderbird for 1961, and with Howard Payne and John Orfe, styled a vehicle that was considered by upper management to be too austere to wear the Thunderbird name.
As sales continued to dwindle at Lincoln, a meeting was held with the goal of saving the brand and laying out some new directions. The two key takeaways from the meeting were that the 1958-1960 Lincolns were too large, a new vehicle would have to be more manageably sized, and the division had to adopt and adhere to a design continuity philosophy. This dictated styling would span nearly 10 years rather than three to four and avoid design nuances similar to Ford or Mercury. Austere as it may have been for a Thunderbird, the upper management thought the concept might be brilliant as a four door and told Engle to restyle it as such.
Within two weeks, it was reintroduced, and the Continental for 1961 was born. It shocked the world with its staid and restrained nature. Available only as a sedan or convertible, the 1961-1969 Continentals remain one of the most sought-after cars ever built. This 1961 Lincoln Continental Convertible was restored by “The Lincoln Whisperer” John Kiszla and features the 430 CI V-8 engine, dual-range automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power-operated convertible top, pushbutton radio, tinted glass and a split-back front bench seat with folding armrest.
The body is finished in Sunburst Yellow with a black convertible top, while the interior sustains the color combination and features wood interior appointments and jeweled gauges. Rolling on white-stripe tires with full-size wheel covers, this striking color combination is refreshing and rarely seen.
