Edsel Ford, who was inspired by the look of European sports models (the long hoods, short rear decks and rear-mounted spare tires), approached Lincoln Chief Stylist Eugene T. "Bob" Gregorie to build a custom car with a sophisticated "continental" look for his March 1939 vacation to Hobe Sound, Florida—a winter gathering spot for the wealthy. Gregorie penned a low-slung, channeled and sectioned Zephyr convertible, and with Edsel’s blessing, the car was built and shipped to Florida. The car was so well received, Edsel ordered it to be put into production immediately.

With its understated elegance, it's no wonder that celebrities the likes of Jack Benny, Clark Gable, Rita Hayworth and Mickey Rooney purchased the sleek Lincoln. The Lincoln Continental presented here is one of 400 Cabriolets produced in 1941. Lovingly restored, this AACA National First Prize winner is finished in Rockingham Tan with a tan cloth top and brown leather interior.

With its broad dual front grilles, fender skirts and spare tire inset to the rear bodywork (to become known as the Continental Kit on other vehicles), the car’s motivation is derived from a 292/120 HP L-head V-12 that breathes through a 2-barrel Holley carburetor and exhales through a single exhaust with polished deflector. Connected to a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission, the engine delivers 220 lb-ft of torque to the factory steel wheels, which are fitted with wide whitewall tires and capped with correct Lincoln hubcaps and matching trim rings. Lowering the cloth top reveals the brown leather interior with a simulated wood-grain dash and Bakelite switchgear and control knobs.

An in-dash clock, AM radio and floor heater were a few luxury items of the day. With its silky styling and luxurious appointments, the first-generation Lincoln Continentals arguably represent Edsel Ford's most important contribution to the automotive industry.
