An outstanding landmark design that almost single-handedly created the booming market in dual-purpose 4x4s, the Range Rover was greeted with universal acclaim on its arrival in 1970 and has remained the class leader, despite ever increasing foreign and domestic competition, ever since. The fact that the original lasted in production for an amazing 24 years before being replaced in 1994 only serves to illustrate the soundness of the original concept. Indeed, the 'old' Range Rover - evocatively renamed Range Rover Classic - did not disappear immediately but continued to be built for another year alongside the new version.
An extensively restored example, this early 'Suffix-B' three-door Range Rover was first registered on 1st March 1973. No early history is known, although the plate colour code reveals the word 'farbe' (colour), we would surmise that the car was delivered new in Switzerland or Germany/Austria. Registered in Holland for the first time in April 2000, the car has resided in Holland ever since and in 2017 was registered by the current Dutch owner, who has had it extensively restored by a private individual in Friesland (photographs available).
This body-off restoration to an acceptable standard included bodywork, paintwork and mechanicals together with a partly renewed interior (new upholstery to the front seats) leaving some details like the door handles, rear bench, etc untouched. The car has driven very few kilometres since restoration and starts and runs instantly.
Bonhams has had the opportunity to drive the car over a short distance and can confirm that its powerful 3.5-litre V8 engine performs well, with steady tick-over and instant response to the throttle. Carried out in January 2020, the last technical inspection is valid until January 2022.
The car comes with current Dutch registration documents; some older Dutch registration documents; and the aforementioned photographic record of the restoration.
