  • Part of a Lancia connoisseur's collection in Italy for many years
  • Thoroughly checked and mechanically serviced in 2018

Launched in 1922, Vincenzo Lancia's revolutionary Lambda was a milestone in automotive history. It was the first car to have a stress-bearing 'monocoque' body and the first to be powered by a V4 engine, while Lancia's patented sliding-pillar independent front suspension gave the Lambda ride and handling qualities unmatched by anything in its class. It would remain a feature of Lancia cars well into the 1950s.

Unlike its revolutionary predecessor, the V8-engined Dilambda of 1929 did not use a stress-bearing body but reverted to a separate chassis. Reversion to a separate frame may have seemed like a retrograde step, but the Dilambda was Lancia's top-of-the-range model and thus intended for the kind of client who typically would prefer to commission a bespoke body from an independent coachbuilder.

By this time, narrow-angle V-configuration engines had become a Lancia speciality, the Dilambda's 3,960cc overhead-valve unit having cylinder banks disposed at only 24 degrees. With 100bhp on tap, the Dilambda in its short-chassis form was capable of reaching around 140km/h, an exceptional performance at the time. The Dilambda remained in production until 1935, by which time only some 1,700 of these luxurious cars had been built.

Right-hand drive, like all Lancias into the 1950s, this stylish Dilambda carries bespoke drophead coupé coachwork by Carlton Carriage Co of Willesden, North London, and is a particularly successful example of a style for which Carlton was renowned at the time. This car was imported into Italy, presumably from the UK, at the beginning of the 1980s and for many years formed part of a noted Lancia connoisseur's collection. He used the impressive touring capabilities of this V8-engined car to the full, taking part in, among other events, the 1984 edition of the Rally Monte Carlo Historique and a journey to Hungary in 1986. The engine was replaced some 20 years ago with a correct unit.

While in the current custodian's hands the car took part in the 2018 edition of the Passione Engadina, demonstrating once again its reliability and comfort over long distances. We are advised by the vendor that the Lancia had been specially prepared for that event, the mechanical components being thoroughly serviced and the body checked and found to be in order. In addition, the interior has been professionally re-upholstered. Offered with Italian registration documents and FIVA and ASI passes, this beautiful Dilambda is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.
