Having established its reputation for producing championship-winning sports cars and luxury saloons, in the early Fifties Jaguar turned to developing a compact sedan. Enter the 1955 2.4, a streamlined 4-door sedan that quickly evolved through development into the Mark II Saloon. The 2.4 was the first unibody design by Jaguar. Using independent A-arms with coil springs up front and trailing arms and cantilever springs at the rear, the 2.4 came with a lower displacement version of the XK inline-6 DOHC engine rated at 112 HP. In 1957 that was enlarged to 3.4 liters and 210 horsepower. Disc brakes were added in 1958.
In 1960 the model was updated again, this time with improved handling, larger glass area and a padded dash. This became the basis for the S-Type introduced in 1963, a technically more sophisticated and luxurious alternative that shared the contemporary Mark II’s 3.8L/220 HP DOHC engine. This 1966 Jaguar S-Type shows the model at its best. It retains its original 3.8L/220 HP engine with dual SU sidedraft carburetors – rebuilt by Faithful Automotive, Inc. of Huntington, New York – and a 4-speed overdrive manual transmission. Repainted in juicy Opalescent Maroon and rolling on chromed knock-off wire wheels wearing Dunlop Whitewall radials, it also features very nice chrome and brightwork.
The Tan leather interior has been professionally reupholstered to Jaguar’s high standards, an approach also taken in renewing the Walnut dash and door panels and rebuilding the Smith gauges. This fine Jaguar S-Type is documented with a written narrative of its history and comes with receipts for the engine rebuild.
