When the E-type made its sensational debut at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, even Enzo Ferrari conceded grudgingly that the new Jaguar was “the most beautiful car in the world.” But there was much more to the E-type than mere show. It was quite simply the fastest production sports car on the road, a defining statement of the old adage “racing improves the breed.” Initially conceived as a successor to the immortal D-type, which had bagged a trio of wins at Le Mans in 1955, 1956 and 1957, Jaguar opted instead to distil the D-type DNA into a race car for the road.

With its wind-cheating shape and power provided by a 3.8L/265 HP version of the famed twin-overhead-cam six, the E-type despatched the 0-60 MPH dash in 7.0 seconds, and recorded a top speed of 150 MPH in road tests. Though its shape and unit construction evolved from the D-type, the interior appointments and manners of the raw racer were refined for the road with fully independent suspension, and the all-round disc brakes were now in-board at the rear to reduce un-sprung weight.

For many aficionados, the first-of-breed purity of the triple-carb 3.8L Series 1 E-types, before U.S. federal regulations compromised the looks and later muted the performance, is the defining expression of the E-type theme. And that’s what we have here, a 1964 3.8L E-type that is one of just 6,886 Series 1 roadsters produced. With its classic Carmen Red livery, black leather interior and black convertible top, it is mercifully free of spurious “garnishes,” such as the needless white-stripe tires that so offend purists.

Instead the correct blackwall tires set off the standard-issue chrome wire wheels with the signature Jaguar two-eared spinners, and similarly on the interior there is no deviation from the drilled three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel and slim-line bucket seats. In its day, the E-type was sensational in one other regard: Aston Martins and Ferraris were more than double the money, and the Mercedes-Benz 300SL roadster was close to three times as much. Today, the price-performance ratio stacks up even more.
