Owned by the same collector for the last twelve years, this 1966 Ford Galaxie LTD 2-door hardtop reverses the time-honored practice of turning a “stripper” passenger car into a world-beating sleeper. The LTD was Ford’s top-line luxury offering, and in 1966 it could be ordered with a new 428 CI engine marketed in Eurospeak as a “7 Litre.” The new engine was designed more for smooth power delivery at low RPM, moving the Galaxie firmly into the full-size luxury segment. Nonetheless, the 428 responded well to expert tuning, which was exercised in this car by no less a Ford performance authority than Holman-Moody.
The completed piece would gladden the heart of any motorhead with its mix of high-rise dual quad Holleys under a custom-fabricated intake shroud, aluminum intake, water pump and Fluidyne radiator, braided lines and hoses, tube headers and chromed Ford Motorsports valve covers. The 428’s power is sent through a Hurst-shifted 3-speed automatic protected by a remote cooler. A multi-link rear suspension, M/T rear and Moroso Drag Special front tires on American Racing wheels and Wilwood 4-wheel disc brakes complete the underpinnings.
The full race treatment extended into the LTD’s roomy interior, which features a custom gauge array and dash-mounted tach and is protected by a full roll cage complete with fore and aft chassis bracing. A Mark Williams quick release steering wheel, full racing harnesses, a fuel cell, Optima Red Top battery with cut-off and a floor-mounted fire extinguisher further contribute to peace of mind. Wrapped in Vintage Burgundy with a matching interior, this no-holds-barred LTD lightweight is capable of consistent 10-second quarter mile times and, unlike the traditional sleeper, announces its potential in no uncertain terms.
