Offered with just 8,200 miles on the odometer, this lovely 2012 Ferrari California borrows its name from the dual-purpose 250 GT variants inspired by California Ferrari distributor John Von Neumann and the later Tojiero-designed 365 California, but its beauty and performance are thoroughly 21st-century Ferrari. Rendered in Ferrari’s institutional aluminum alloy, the new California’s visage recalls the original 250 California, contributing to the low drag coefficient that was the product of more than 1,000 hours of wind-tunnel testing.
The car represents many Ferrari firsts: its 4.3L/460 HP DOHC 32-valve V-8 engine, equipped with variable valve timing, is the first V-8 mounted in front of the cockpit. It is the first to employ a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and multilink rear suspension, the first with a folding metal roof and the first with direct fuel injection. The California’s double-wishbone front suspension, front and rear sway bars, speed-sensitive power rack-and-pinion steering, limited-slip differential and ABS-assisted Brembo ceramic disc brakes with slotted rotors and yellow calipers ensure handling and stopping that either rivals or surpasses such Ferrari milestones as the Enzo.
And that car lacked the California’s captivating Launch Control feature that facilitates exhilarating hole shots with hardly a squeak from the Pirelli P-Zero tires. Sparkling under the sun in beautiful white with contrasting Iroko Brown leather in the lush interior, the car’s power-operated aluminum hardtop opens to reveal typically superb surroundings, offering soft leather upholstery with contrasting white stitching and matching Prancing Horse embroidery on the headrests.
Column-mounted shift paddles hide behind the leather-wrapped steering wheel that is home to the start button, Manettino and audio-system controls, and there is navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone climate controls and an entertainment system with a 6.5-inch touch screen. Optioned with Scuderia shields, parking camera, carbon-fiber rear molding, power heated mirrors and 19-inch silver-alloy wheels, this pristine, low-mileage 2012 Ferrari California is a worthy successor to its legendary forerunners.
