Enzo Ferrari defied expectations when he answered the direct challenge set forth by the stunning Lamborghini Miura—not with a midengine design of his own, but with the front-engined 365 GTB/4 of 1968. Almost immediately nicknamed the Daytona in honor of Ferrari’s overwhelming 1-2-3 finish in the 24 hour classic, the 365 GTB/4 bore stunning Pininfarina coachwork, rendered in form by Scaglietti over a traditional ladder-style chassis made of parallel, large-diameter, steel main tubes connected by a series of smaller-diameter crossmembers.

Its 4.4L V-12 engine featured double overhead camshafts with centrally located spark plugs, an impressive series of six Weber downdraft carburetors, dual distributors and dry-sump lubrication to produce 352 HP at a ripping 7,500 RPM and 318 lb-ft peak torque, delivered through a rear-mounted 5-speed manual gearbox to an integral limited-slip differential. All-independent front and rear wishbone suspension, coil springs over shock absorbers, sway bars, rack-and-pinion steering and ventilated hydraulic disc brakes gave the Daytona sensational roadholding and braking.

The result of Ferrari’s engineering wizardry and Pininfarina’s brilliance was a timelessly beautiful two-seat grand tourer that fulfilled its mission to be the fastest production car in the world, a title it claimed over rival Lamborghini with a proven top speed of 174 MPH. A Spider version, the GTS/4, debuted soon after the Daytona coupe’s 1968 introduction, proving the innate beauty of Pininfarina’s original design. Serial No. 16465, this 1973 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider is one of only 122 produced from 1968 through 1973.

Imported through Chinetti-Garthwaite Imports Inc. in Paoli, Pennsylvania, it is finished in Giallo Dino with a black leather interior and features air conditioning and Ansa exhaust. Rolling on Borrani wire wheels, it now shows just 21,653 miles on the odometer and presents in excellent condition throughout, with an attractive patina that suggests careful use and maintenance.
