Rightly regarded by many enthusiasts and owners as Ferrari’s ultimate V-12 Berlinetta from the storied marque’s Classic Era, the 365 GTB/4 is an instantly recognized icon today. Debuted at Paris in 1968, the new model was unofficially named Daytona in celebration of Ferrari’s 1-2-3 podium sweep scored there against Ford’s GT40 armada in 1967. The new Ferrari’s nickname was certainly warranted, given the performance delivered by its DOHC 4.4L V-12 engine, breathing through six twin-choke Weber carburetors and delivering a factory-rated 352 HP.

While many questioned Ferrari’s claimed 174 MPH top speed for the 365 GTB/4, it was confirmed by a succession of road tests, including the infamous Road & Track photograph with their test car’s speedometer reading 180 MPH, later corrected to a “true” 173 MPH. The era’s wealthiest buyers clamored for a Daytona of their own.

Le Mans-winning Ferrari driver and automotive journalist Paul Frère likely summed up the experience best. “If you go faster, it’s the engine that makes the music, the finest music of all to the ears of the enthusiast and the music he can enjoy in a well-sprung car, fitted with such amenities as electric window lifters, air conditioning and a really capacious luggage locker—a Grand Touring car par excellence.” In addition to the 1,383 examples of the 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta produced from 1968 to 1974, a limited run numbering 122 Spiders were produced.

Logically, demand has always exceeded supply, spurring conversion of some Berlinettas to open-air Daytona Spider form, including this European-specification example. A previous owner commissioned Ferrari of Los Gatos to send the car to Scaglietti, the original Daytona Spider coachbuilder in Italy, to perform a Spider conversion in 1981. Powered by a matching-numbers 4.4L V-12 engine paired with a 5-speed manual rear transaxle, this very special Daytona Spider conversion is handsomely finished in Giallo Fly (Fly Yellow), which is complemented by a new Nero (black) leather interior, new interior carpeting and a new black soft top.

Desirable features and amenities include factory air conditioning, power windows, power brakes, Veglia Borletti instruments and original Borrani wire wheels. An owner’s manual and tool roll round out this Scaglietti-converted 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider Conversion.
