From inception as an independent marque in 1947, Ferrari achieved an incredibly successful competition record. One of its earliest racing milestones came at the 1948 Mille Miglia, when Clemente Biondetti and his mechanic Giuseppe Navona piloted a Ferrari 166 Sport to overall victory. A purpose-built 166 racing car soon followed, designated 166 MM in recognition of the swept volume of each of its engine’s 12 cylinders and “MM” commemorating that glorious 1948 Mille Miglia win. The 166 MM remains legendary as the only car to win all three of the greatest European sports-car races of the postwar era, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Targa Florio and the Mille Miglia.

A first series of 34 cars were built through late 1951, followed by 13 second-series cars, designated 166 MM/53, featuring various improvements and intended for privateers to compete in the popular under-2-liter class. Of the 13 Ferrari 166 MM/53s produced, nine were bodied by the Vignale coachworks, including six Vignale Spyders that featured a more rounded version of the original Michelotti design. Adventurous and purposeful, the 166 MM/53 Vignale Spyders featured recessed headlamps, upward-cut front fenders, cut-down doors and cutaway rear fenders for improved brake cooling.

Exceedingly rare, these cars were the developmental link between Ferrari’s successful early 166 models and the larger-displacement 212. Bearing S/N 0342M, this 166 MM/53 Vignale Spider is not only one of the 13 Ferrari 166 MM/53 chassis produced and one of the six Ferrari 166 MM/53 Vignale Spyders built, but it is the last 166 MM/53 Vignale Spyder built, with assembly completed in June 1953. At the time of writing, its odometer reads 37,306 kilometers (approximately 21,381 miles). The 1995cc V-12 engine is numbered 21M and paired with the 5-speed manual transmission numbered 23.

Fascinating history includes competitive use in various California sports car races in 1953-54 with its first owner, Hollywood screenwriter E. Ronald “Randy” MacDougall, who scored several class wins and podium finishes during his ownership. Gerry Sutterfireld, one of the earliest members of the FCA, acquired 0342M in April 1967. At Sutterfield’s debut outing with 0342M at the FCA annual meet in 1974, the 166 MM/53 won four first-place awards: Best Performance Award for Competition and Dual Purpose Cars, First in Class for Competition Cars, First in Class for Ladies’ Choice, and Judges’ Choice (later renamed Best of Show).

Phil Bachman acquired 0342M from Sutterfield in 2003, and preservation work was performed at Ferrari expert Wayne Obry’s Motion Products in 2006. Appropriately, the rare and venerable 166 MM/53 Vignale Spyder was enjoyed by the Bachman family on the Colorado Grand five times (2007-2011). In 2014, it was invited by Ferrari North America to be displayed at the Bridge Club in Bridgehampton, New York, at a party celebrating Ferrari North America’s 60th Anniversary.

Other appearances included display at the 2015 Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance, participation in a special exhibition for Pebble Beach race cars at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and display at the 2018 Highlands Motoring Festival in North Carolina. In print, 0342M was mentioned in the September/October 1992 issue of Vintage Motorsport magazine, featured in Issue 149 (4th Quarter, 2003) of Prancing Horse, the quarterly publication of the Ferrari Club of America, and pictured on the cover of the September 14, 2015 issue of Autoweek magazine.

Offered with copies of factory build records, this 166 MM/53 Vignale Spider exemplifies the early and heroic 1950s era at Ferrari, and the marque’s uncanny ability to build some of the most effective, yet beautiful racing cars ever created.
