One of 799 produced in a brief production run that began in late 2015, this one-of-a-kind, highly optioned 2017 Ferrari F12tdf is one of the fastest road-going Ferraris ever built. That should come as no surprise considering that the car upon which it was based, the F12, previously held that title, and for all the F12’s prodigious talents, the F12tdf is even sharper and more focused in its role as the ultimate track-attack machine. This is one hardcore Ferrari, imbued with all the technology and panache its Maranello makers could muster.

It seems designed-in that the tdf—a reference to the Tour de France Ferraris that dominated that famed race from 1956 to 1964—will challenge any driver to test the limits of his or her ability, and always reward skill with breathtaking performance. The tdf has more of practically everything that went into making the F12 the greatest. Ferrari coaxed another 40 prancing horses from the F12’s mighty 6.3L V-12 engine, 769 HP to be precise.

A short-stroke design meant to rev, the tdf’s V-12 uses an exclusive variable-length intake runner system and racing-specification tappets to generate 80 percent of its 520 lb-ft torque output at just 2,500 RPM, while maximum power arrives at 8,500 RPM on the way to its 8,900 RPM redline. Spent gasses are eliminated through beautiful long-tube exhaust headers that play a leading role in generating the tdf’s distinctive high-pitched howl at its top speed in excess of 211 MPH. Like all Ferraris now, the tdf is equipped with an automatic transmission, in this case a revised dual-clutch rear-mounted 7-speed unit contained with the electronically controlled E-Diff differential.

The V-12 revs with lightning quickness, sending the tach needle skyward so quickly that it’s amazing the transmission keeps up. The tdf-specification box has been recalibrated for more aggressive shifts, reducing upshift times by 30 percent and downshifts by 40 percent. An interesting feature in both the F12 and the tdf is the rearward arrangement of the gears allowing placement in closer proximity to the rear bulkhead, which in turn made it possible to reposition the fuel tank for improved weight distribution.

Ferrari’s research into various alloys made possible the incredibly stiff 12-piece aluminum chassis that saved 110 pounds over the F12’s ground-breaking 599 GTB predecessor; the tdf further benefits from another 243 pounds in shaved weight through extensive use of carbon fiber. The F12’s highly developed aerodynamics also play well for the tdf, most significantly the F12’s wind-tunnel-developed undertray, front splitter, rear spoiler and diffuser, and the unique “Air Bridge” front-end treatment that channels air off the hood and down to depressions in the body sides to create more downforce at the car’s dynamic center.

In the tdf, all are more highly developed; the entire nose has been reshaped and given molded-in dive planes; the rear spoiler is deeper and longer, the rear diffuser more open and effective, and the Air Bridges more pronounced. There are also more aggressive lower side wings, and the upper rear quarters are vented in a style reminiscent of the 250 GTO to evacuate the air pressure that builds in the rear wheel wells at speed. At speeds at or above 124 MPH, the entire package firmly plants the tdf to the tune of 507 pounds of downforce, double that of the F12.

A combination of double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, SCM-E electromagnetic dampers, 4-wheel steering and carbon-ceramic disc brakes with Rosso Scuderia calipers combine to produce astonishing grip and response through extra-wide Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires on 20-inch alloy wheels. Naturally, the steering wheel-mounted Manettino switch offers several different suspension modes, including Race, Sport and Wet.

Finished in Grigio Ferro with Rosso Scuderia stripes and Scuderia fender badges, this 2017 Ferrari F12tdf is virtually flawless at 446 miles and boasts more than $104,000 in additional options, including many carbon-fiber exterior and interior trim pieces, Adaptive Front Light system (AFS), colored safety belts, suspension lifter, Prancing Horse headrest embroidery and front and rear parking cameras.
