In 1996, four years after the debut of the production Dodge Viper, a coupe version, the Viper GTS, was introduced. Inspired by the Pete Brock-designed Shelby Cobra Daytona coupe of the mid-1960s, it featured a V-10 engine reworked for more power and less weight, a redesigned competition-specific chassis and suspension, and more aerodynamic bodywork, with the distinctive “double bubble” roofline. The GTS was also the first comfortable variant of the Dodge Viper, fitted with air conditioning, power windows, power locks, and airbags as standard equipment. That year the Viper GTS served as the pace car for the Indianapolis 500.
In 2002 at the Chicago Auto Show, Dodge debuted the Viper GTS Final Edition, commemorating the last 2002 Viper coupes to be completed at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant. In total 360 GTS Final Editions were produced; they were all finished in Viper Red with Stone White racing stripes, an homage to the 2000 Daytona and American Le Mans Series Viper racecars. Beyond the special exterior color scheme they featured red stitching on the black leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and each Final Edition received a numbered dash plaque.
This GTS Final Edition, serial number 195, was built on 8 May 2002. It was sold new through Woodhouse Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge in Blair, Nebraska to Jody Balch of Clovis, New Mexico. Jody would enjoy the car for nearly a year before it was sold on Christmas Eve 2003, with 500 miles on the odometer, by Bill Pemberton of Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge in Blair, Nebraska to current ownership, a sales agreement for which is on file. As of cataloguing time, the car had covered 6,844 miles from new. A well-looked-after example, this GTS Final Edition is accompanied by its window sticker, owner’s manuals, sales literature, Operating Tips VHS tape, original owner correspondence, and invoices dating back to 2002.
