Dodge Material. This was an advertising slogan where the idea was that you could be somebody who belonged to a special group of, well, let’s just say, serious car enthusiasts (some onlookers doubted they were normal people, but the Dodge buyers themselves usually didn’t care what they thought!). At any rate, Chrysler was not shy about marketing their cars, and back in 1970, somebody went into a Dodge franchise and started checking off options. This car, the only Mopar coming from the special Reggie Jackson Collection offered at Monterey this year, is all business and all fun at the same time.
To begin with, this was the first year for the Challenger body design, and the new platform allowed any engine in the marque’s line-up to be installed in it. Here, that meant King Kong, the 426/425 HP Hemi V-8 engine. With a price to match its notoriety, just 287 Hemi R/T hardtops were produced for 1970, and this buyer also intended to make it work, as the car was optioned with the A34 Super Track Pak as well. That code mandated a heavy-duty A833 4-speed manual transmission with an associated 4.10-geared Dana 9 3/4 Sure Grip differential, heavy-duty cooling equipment and front disc brakes.
Ordering the Hemi automatically gave the car added suspension and frame upgrades, and in this instance, there is a color-matched Shaker hood scoop over the dual 4-barrel carburetors. However serious that all was, the buyer also selected extra-cost Hi-Impact FC7 Plum Crazy paint, an outrageous hue that here is unbroken by stripes or graphics. Inside is the deluxe R/T-grade black vinyl bucket seat interior, with the Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, Rallye instrument cluster, radio delete and woodgrain trim. Light chrome trim, 426 HEMI scoop callouts and exhaust tips complete the look, with the car riding on painted steel wheels featuring small-diameter hubcaps and Goodyear F70-15 Polyglas tires.
