Between October 8, 1951 and November 12, 1951, to show thanks and solidarity for the Canadians support during World War II, then Princess Elizabeth, soon to become Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, toured Canada, following the tour route her father and mother had traveled in 1939. The 1951 tour covered some 15,000 miles using planes, trains, ships and cars, namely a Lincoln Cosmopolitan convertible, a Cadillac Series 62 convertible and two Chryslers, one limousine and one New Yorker convertible. After the tour, the New Yorker convertible was displayed during the opening of a new Chrysler dealership in Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Finished in black with a matching convertible top and a burgundy interior, that New Yorker convertible, seen here, now rides on wide whitewall tires with full-diameter polished wheel covers. Fitted with twin spotlights, amber driving lights, polished rocker arm moldings and stone guards, the car is powered by a 331 CI Fire Power V-8 engine with the Fluid Drive automatic transmission. With a known ownership history and extensive documentation, photographs and letters verifying its use for Queen Elizabeth II’s 1951 Canadian Royal Tour, this New Yorker exemplifies the engineering leadership of the American auto industry at the time.
Equipped with Hydra-Guide power steering, Hydra-Lizer shock absorbers, Safety-Level ride, Cycle-Bonded brake linings and Safety-Rim Wheels, the 1951 New Yorker was highly advanced and powerful. Inside, it was opulent and comfortable with pleated leather seating surfaces, plush carpeting, a padded dash topper, an AM radio, an in-dash clock, a heater, a defroster and a uniquely styled dashboard. The New Yorker convertible likely impressed everyone who saw it, including the Royals themselves. Complete with an owner’s manual and a Chrysler foldout brochure, the car also has a California black plate.
