From its introduction in 1970 through subsequent generations, the ZR1 moniker has always commanded respect as the most exotic, complete, best-performing Corvette in the lineup, but this 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Coupe stands head and shoulders above its predecessors as the ultimate production front-engine Corvette of all time. This splendid, low-mileage, Torch Red example makes that case with ease, starting with its central claim to fame: the mighty LT5 breaking out from under its vented carbon fiber hood.
Working with the same all-aluminum LT4 V-8 powering the contemporary Camaro ZL1 and Cadillac CTS-V, Corvette Engineering specified a 52% larger Eaton TVS supercharger and a host of internal upgrades to realize its target of 755 HP and 715 lb-ft of torque, with 600 lb-ft coming in at just 2,200 RPM. The result: unrelenting acceleration—think 3 seconds to 60 MPH and a top speed reaching 200 MPH. An 8-speed, paddle-shifted automatic works through the car’s electronically controlled limited-slip differential, part of the ZR1 Performance Package that includes performance suspension, magnetic ride control, dry sump oiling, a rear differential cooler and performance exhaust.
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires on black alloy wheels and carbon ceramic disc brakes with red-painted calipers ensure magnetic handling at the limit, where the ZR1’s ZTK Track Performance Package comes into play with front splitter end caps and an adjustable high rear wing. Standard features abound in this ZR1’s Jet Black interior: heated and ventilated Napa leather power bucket seats with red contrast stitching and red seatbelts, dual-zone climate control, power windows, locks and heated power outside mirrors, an auto-dimming interior rear view mirror, navigation, SiriusXM and Bluetooth connectivity and the memory package.
