Cadillac stunned the motoring world at the New York Auto Show on January 4, 1930, with the introduction of its breathtaking new V-16, which was powered by the first true 16-cylinder engine designed and purpose-built from scratch. Working under GM Engineering chief Charles Kettering, Owen Milton Nacker led V-16 development. The project, which began in 1926, was conducted under strict secrecy, complete with cover stories claiming the V-16 was Cadillac’s contribution to a new GM bus design.
Although the V-16 was brilliantly designed and enjoyed healthy demand at first, its fast-shrinking Great Depression-era market meant that the V-16 was, of course, produced in tiny numbers—4,378 in all through 1940, according to marque experts, including a completely redesigned L-head engine for the last three years, for those few remaining buyers capable of paying more than 10 times the cost of a contemporary Chevrolet or Ford. Just 311 Sixteens were built for 1938, all sporting luxurious bodies by Fleetwood.
Previously owned by famed actress Mae West, this regal and luxurious 1938 Cadillac V-16 Fleetwood Sedan is powered by its maker’s signature 431 CI flathead V-16 engine, paired with a 3-speed column-shifted manual transmission. Featuring a maroon exterior finish, complemented by a black padded roof covering, its driver’s compartment is trimmed in black upholstery with a split bench seat, a banjo-style three-spoke steering wheel with a “Sixteen”-scripted horn button, and dual windshield wipers.
Kept from prying eyes by the Fleetwood Sedan’s blind rear quarters, rear occupants are treated to a generous button-tucked Mohair bench seat, a foot rest bar, additional jump seats, visually striking Art Deco-styled ashtrays, and handsome wood-grain trim adorning the crank-up glass divider and windows. The passenger partition also includes a clock. Consistent with its elite status, this Fleetwood-bodied Sixteen is highly equipped with dual fender-mounted spares with matching hinged and locking hard covers with top-mounted mirrors.
Other highlights include the reverse-hinged rear doors, running boards with wide rubber step plates, metal trim, stacked three-bar front and rear fender accents, chrome bumpers and chrome bullet-style headlights. Color-keyed steel wheels mount chrome hubcaps displaying Cadillac’s logo and period-style white sidewall tires. Two photo books and a yellow California license plate are included, along with various spare parts.
