One of the most striking examples of GM's Motorama design influence can be seen in this 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible. From its “Dagmar” front bumpers to the jet-age tail fins, this car beautifully evoked the vision of style and luxury that GM Design Vice President Harley J. Earl had for the company’s top-level division. Competition was fierce for luxury cars in the early postwar period, with Ford raising the stakes with its new Continental Division and its lone offering, the Mark II. Chrysler's Imperial Division also catered to the same clientele, though neither sold as many units as Cadillac.

To help up the ante with its crosstown rivals, Cadillac added the Eldorado sub-series to the Model 62 series as new offerings for 1956. They were available in two body styles: the Eldorado Seville two-door hardtop and the Eldorado Biarritz convertible. Both were named for historically significant European cities, Seville, in Spain, and Biarritz, in France. Perched on a 129-inch wheelbase, the Eldorados measured an impressive 222.2 inches in overall length, making a bold statement wherever they went. This particular example is one of just 2,150 built that year and remains in remarkably original condition, with one repaint in the original Sonic Blue with a white soft top.

It retains its factory-issue blue and white interior and features power steering and brakes, power window lifts, a power convertible top, clock and signal-seeking AM radio, as well as chrome-plated Sabre wheels mounting wide whitewall radial tires. The Biarritz's powertrain consists of Cadillac's top-performing engine that year, a dual-quad version of its 365 CI V-8 engine. With a 9.75:1 compression ratio, the engine developed 305 HP at 4,700 RPM, with 400 lb-ft of torque at 3,200. The engine features a pair of Carter carburetors and is topped by a “Batwing” air cleaner. Power is smoothly transferred to a 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission.
