Buick soldiered on with its full-size formula of big-car style, performance and features until an update in 1949 improved on tradition and brought the now famous portholes—or Ventiports—into mid-century American automotive design. The 1949 lineup retained much of the popular Buick style ahead of a controversial 1950 update. This 1949 Buick Super Series 50 Model 56C convertible with optional Dynaflow automatic transmission slots in at the top of its line, just under the Series 70 Roadmaster. The refreshed Buick shows just 55,733 believed-original miles on its odometer and comes with its original Buick owner's guide and folding-top instructions.
The 248 CI Buick Fireball inline 8-cylinder engine was rated for 115 HP at 3,600 RPM, thanks to a bump in compression ratio over the less powerful Series 40 version. New hydraulic lifters were engineered for quiet running and automatic valve-lash adjustment, and the 2-barrel downdraft carburetor worked with Duomatic spark advance ignition for peak efficiency and power. The optional Dynaflow automatic transmission featured a 5-element torque converter and planetary gearset for smooth operation and brought special exterior badging and interior elements. Fender-top parking lamps are a nod to prewar Buick styling, and the Fisher body is finished in new black paint.
Polished and chrome-plated trim, a new trunk emblem and fender skirts add Buick elegance. Lowering the power-actuated top reveals the Model 56C trim interior with power-operated seat, windows and new leather upholstery. The steering wheel wears the Dynaflow medallion (usually reserved for the Roadmaster above what Buick called Pilot-Centered instrumentation), optional Sonomatic pushbutton radio and controls for the Weather Warden heating-and-ventilation system on the dash. New door weather stripping keeps the cabin quiet. The Buick Super rides on chrome-plated wire wheels dressed with spinner caps and wide whitewall tires.
