The sixth generation of Buick’s Roadmaster flagship launched as a 1954 model. The chassis was lowered and widened relative to its predecessor, and handling was greatly improved. Under the hood, a new 322-cubic-inch V-8 engine replaced the long-running Fireball straight-eight. Redesigned bodywork was more streamlined, and while the exterior of the Roadmaster was largely the same as that of lesser models in the lineup, it did have four fender-mounted “ventiports”—one more than usual—among other subtle cues, to help distinguish it.

Buick would update the look of the Roadmaster in subtle ways over the lifespan of the sixth generation. Styling updates introduced for the 1956 model that further differentiated the Roadmaster from the rest of the lineup included twin chrome strips on the trunk lid, “bomb sights” atop both front fenders, added “Roadmaster” script in several locations, and a chrome side strip with less of a dip toward the rocker panel. But it was the more sumptuous interior that truly set the Roadmaster apart, with full carpeting, chrome bands on the seats of two-door models, rear armrests on sedans, and posher nylon, broadcloth, and leather upholstery combinations.

The list of standard equipment on the 1956 model was lengthy and included power steering, power brakes, Perimeter Heater, an improved variable-pitch Dynaflow automatic transmission, backup lights, windshield washers, glare-proof rearview mirror, electric clock, deluxe wheel covers, foam-cushioned seats, foam-backed carpets, padded dash, and, on certain models, power windows and a power seat.

The convertible example offered here is finished in a stunning two-tone color combination of Tahiti Coral and Dover White over a black and white leather interior. The car features power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seat, and a power operated soft top. It rides on wide-whitewall tires mounted to wire wheels. Other amenities include a Selectronic AM radio and under-dash heating controls. As with previous Roadmaster convertibles, Buick produced far fewer than the hardtop models. Just 4,354 rolled off the production line for the 1956 model year, making this well-preserved example a rare and desirable find.
