This 1988 BMW M6 represents the melding of European luxury and power and was the last production year for the US. BMW Motorsport, now referred to as simply M, is the in-house motorsports division of BMW. With roots in racing stretching back to 1972, the division infused production cars with race-bred performance technology for the best of Bavarian appointments and performance. About 5,800 1984-89 M6s were produced worldwide, and this unrestored 1988 example of E24 heritage is one of just 319 earmarked for the U.S. market.
The 1988 American-market M6 featured signature shark-nose styling accented by a front spoiler with fog lamps and standardized smaller world bumpers where the 1987 carried larger less desirable versions. Hand-stitched Natur Nappa leather envelops the 8-way power-adjustable 3-position memory seats, with the “1988 only” Half-line leather interior. A telescoping steering column joins a 2-way power sunroof, AM/FM stereo sound system with cassette tape player with integrated equalizer and power windows and side mirrors. Automatic air conditioning with an additional rear system keeps the cabin at optimal temperature. Intermittent windshield wipers feature heated washer jets for all-weather vision.
The M-group added a 5-speed manual gearbox, sport-tuned suspension, limited-slip rear differential and larger 4-wheel vented disc brakes with anti-lock technology to finish the M6 package. The 3.5-liter inline 6-cylinder engine packs a dual-overhead camshaft 24-valve cylinder head for 256 HP at 6,500 RPM and 243 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 RPM. The engine was fed by fuel injection through individual throttle bodies for maximum performance and signature sound on the way to a top speed of 158 MPH.
This Cinnabar Red M6 displays just 25,000 miles on the odometer and comes with its original floor mats, factory-issue tool kit and rides on aftermarket BBS 3-Piece 17-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 245/40ZR17 tires.
