Mirroring the brilliant performance of its full-blooded race car companions, the street M3 was near universally praised as a game-changing car, ushering in an entirely new baseline for how high-end sports saloons should drive, and simultaneously setting the stage for a legendary bloodline of M3's now in its sixth generation.

The M3 Sport Evo, the final, ultimate evolution of the E30 M3, and by extension perhaps the most desirable homologation sports sedan of all-time, first saw light of day in 1990.

Modifications were extensive, including heavily revised suspension, aerodynamics, thinner, lighter glass, and most notably of all, a heavily uprated engine. Power was provided by a bored, stroked, and thoroughly massaged 2.5 liter version of the standard M3's race-bred S13 engine. Aside from an increase in displacement, upgrades included fitment of larger intake valves, sodium-filled exhaust valves, a revised exhaust header, more aggressive camshaft profiles, and additional oil nozzles for improved piston cooling. These changes and others helped the twin-cam, quad-throttle four yield an incredible 235 hp at 7,000 rpm, placing it among the highest specific-output engines of the era. The chef's kiss were a set of red plug wires, another Evo-specific highlight.

Suspension changes are too numerous to list in full, however highlights included 300% more steering caster angle, revised spring and damper rates, revised anti-roll bars, and a wider track. Combined, this specification offered even greater immediacy and agility when compared to the standard E30 M3, a car already regarded as one of the sharpest-handling machines of the day.

THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

Number 90 of 600 hand-built by BMW's Motorsport division, this 1990 M3 Sport Evolution is one of four sold new in Switzerland–two in black, two in red. A lifetime Swiss resident, the car is now offered by its third loving caretaker with fewer than 78,000 kilometers from new.

Fitted with several desirable options including a sunroof, rear sunshade, leather, M

  • branded leather Recaro seats, and air conditioning (since removed for weight savings, but complete and included), the car remains in stunning condition throughout.

Compared with standard M3 derivatives, the Sport Evo features enlarged front fender openings to accommodate wider wheels and rubber, as well as an adjustable front splitter and rear wing designed to vary downforce as required by different circuits. Note also that fog lights are absent, their empty nacelles repurposed to feed brake cooling ducts. Jet Black and Brilliant Red were the only colors offered, and wheels are original, EVO-specific 16x7.5" Style 5 items.

Inside, the car is further distinguished from lesser M3's by several characteristics, including a prominent plate identifying this example as a Sport Evo, an Alcantra-wrapped steering wheel, illuminated gear knob, M

branded driver's footrest, and Recaro SR-series seats with tricolor

Division stripes, the majority of which seem to have been standard, cloth items as opposed to the optional leather ones fitted here. Note the factory red seat belts as well

The auction example remains almost entirely standard, save for a handful of sympathetic, high-quality, and easily reversible upgrades including a front strut tower brace, braided stainless steel brake lines, and Eibach adjustable dampers.

Registered with and certified by the BMW Classic Center in Munich, the car has always been professionally maintained, as documented by extensive included paperwork . Furthermore, the car has participated in two very noteworthy parade laps–once as part of opening ceremonies for the 2010 12 Hours of Nürburgring, and again at Le Mans during 2016's 100 Years of BMW celebrations, where it served as the official, factory-chosen representative for all M3 Sport Evolutions.

Recent maintenance included a service consisting of new spark plugs, wires, fluids, filters, and more. A rare opportunity to own BMWs street and track weapon, this M3 Sport Evolution is the perfect addition for any collection.
